Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
