A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
